ERR SELECT is not allowed in cluster mode: SELECT is not allowed in cluster mode

Redis

What does it mean?

In Redis Cluster mode you tried to switch to a different logical database (DB index) with SELECT. Cluster mode supports only database 0; multiple DBs cannot be used.

Why does it happen?

An application that switches between DBs 0-15 with SELECT on standalone Redis keeps sending the same command after moving to Redis Cluster. Because the cluster architecture distributes data by slot, the multi-DB concept is not supported.

How to fix it

Remove SELECT calls in cluster mode; only DB 0 is used. If you need logical separation, use key prefixes (namespaces) (e.g., app1:key). If certain keys must be processed together, use a hash tag ({user123}) so they land in the same slot. Make the application configuration cluster-aware.
