ORA-28001: the password has expired
OracleWhat does it mean?
The password of the database user you are connecting as has expired because the PASSWORD_LIFE_TIME of its profile elapsed. No session can be opened until the password is changed.
Why does it happen?
The password lifetime defined in the user's profile has ended and the grace period has also elapsed. In Oracle 11g and later, passwords in the DEFAULT profile expire every 180 days; this causes unexpected outages especially for long-lived application service accounts.
How to fix it
Change the password: ALTER USER app_user IDENTIFIED BY new_password; To avoid recurring issues with application accounts, use a profile without password expiry: CREATE PROFILE app_profile LIMIT PASSWORD_LIFE_TIME UNLIMITED; then ALTER USER app_user PROFILE app_profile; Monitoring that warns before expiry is also useful. Check the status with ACCOUNT_STATUS in DBA_USERS.
