ORA-00376: file N cannot be read at this time

Oracle

What does it mean?

The datafile with the given number cannot be read right now because it is offline or inaccessible. Queries and operations accessing data in the affected tablespace fail with this error.

Why does it happen?

The datafile was taken offline automatically after an error or manually; it is awaiting media recovery; the disk became inaccessible; or a file that cannot be recovered in NOARCHIVELOG mode was left offline. Usually accompanied by an ORA-01110 line identifying the file.

How to fix it

View file status: SELECT file#, name, status FROM v$datafile WHERE status != 'ONLINE'; Recover it and bring it online: RECOVER DATAFILE N; then ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE N ONLINE; If there is physical corruption/loss, restore and recover with RMAN: RESTORE DATAFILE N; RECOVER DATAFILE N; Also fix the underlying disk/hardware problem.
