40544: The database has reached its size quota (Azure SQL)
SQL ServerWhat does it mean?
Azure SQL Database reached the maximum data size quota set for the service tier. The database cannot grow any further, so new writes fail.
Why does it happen?
Data growing up to the tier limit; large indexes/log consuming space; or a small MAXSIZE allowed by the selected tier (e.g. Basic/Standard S-series). Unarchived historical data also fills the quota quickly.
How to fix it
Free space: delete/archive unneeded data, drop unused indexes, compress tables (data compression). As a permanent fix, increase MAXSIZE or move to a higher service tier: ALTER DATABASE db MODIFY (MAXSIZE = 250 GB); Monitor size usage with sys.database_files and related DMVs. Plan scaling ahead based on the growth trend.
