Change a parameter for the session (SET)

PostgreSQLParameters

Command

SET work_mem = '256MB';

What it does

Changes the parameter only for the current connection/session; it resets when the session ends.

When to use it

When a setting needs to be raised temporarily for a single heavy query or batch job.

Caution

Use SET LOCAL to limit it to a single transaction. A global change requires ALTER SYSTEM.
