Resize a redo log group (drop + add)

OracleRedo & Archive

Command

-- 1) The group to be resized must be INACTIVE; if not, switch:
ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE;
ALTER SYSTEM CHECKPOINT;
-- 2) Drop the old group:
ALTER DATABASE DROP LOGFILE GROUP 1;
-- 3) Add it again with the new size:
ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE GROUP 1
  ('/u01/oradata/ORCL/redo01a.log',
   '/u02/oradata/ORCL/redo01b.log') SIZE 1G REUSE;

What it does

A redo log cannot be resized directly; it is done by dropping the group and adding it back with the new size.

When to use it

When redo files are too small/large, to tune checkpoint frequency.

Caution

Only an INACTIVE or UNUSED group can be dropped; do not drop the CURRENT/ACTIVE group. At least two groups must always remain. REUSE reuses the existing file.
