28P01: invalid_password

PostgreSQL

What does it mean?

The password supplied during authentication is wrong; login was rejected for the role.

Why does it happen?

A wrong password, a changed password, stale credentials in the application connection string, or a mismatch with the authentication method expected in pg_hba.conf (scram-sha-256, md5).

How to fix it

Verify the password and reset it if needed: ALTER ROLE app_role WITH PASSWORD 'new_password'. Make sure the method in pg_hba.conf is compatible with the client (old clients can have problems with scram-sha-256). After changes, reload the configuration with SELECT pg_reload_conf().
