snapshot_missing_exception: Snapshot is missing

Elasticsearch

What does it mean?

The referenced snapshot was not found in the specified repository. It indicates that a nonexistent snapshot name was used during a restore, delete or status request.

Why does it happen?

The snapshot name is misspelled; the snapshot was deleted earlier; the wrong repository was queried; or the backup never completed. A similar result occurs when the repository definition has changed or is unreachable.

How to fix it

List the snapshots in the repository: GET _snapshot/repo_name/_all (or for a specific name GET _snapshot/repo_name/snapshot_name). Retry with the correct repository and snapshot name. Check the repository definition: GET _snapshot/repo_name. Verify that your backup policy (SLM) runs successfully and produces snapshots.
